Tepid Water Systems
Tepid Water Systems

WHY A TEPID WATER SYSTEM?
ANSI Z358.1 recommends that if a person comes in contact with any hazardous material, the exposed areas should be flushed for at least 15 minutes. Drench showering with very cold water poses a health hazard to employees and a liability problem to employers. Icy waters discourages adequate wash downs, because it is an obvious deterrent to stepping under a shower, much less staying there for 15 minutes. When contaminated clothing is removed for thorough cleaning, the use of cold water contributes to possible shock and hypothermia. From ANSIs standpoint the use of tepid water encourages proper use of drench showers and eyewashes in emergency situations and helps prevent bodily heat loss.

Tepid Water Packages
Speakman Safety Products makes tepid water easy to purchase and install with our tepid water packages. Engineered to provide proper flows, Speakman tepid systems offer cost effective solutions for protecting employees from cold flushing fluids. All necessary components are provided for an effortless installation; simply provide the recommended supply of hot and cold water. Where flushing of the eyes and body is required, the SE-690- TW package offers a combination shower and eye/face wash for total body protection. For applications where an eyewash is the only required protection, the SE-490- TW is the logical choice.

Tepid Water Systems
For facilities with steam available, Speakman safety products offer several solutions for providing tepid water. Our SE-390 is a compact unit that provides a simple tum key system for individual showers or combination units. Simply provide steam and cold water and this unit will deliver from 3 to 30 gpm of 85 F water.
For larger applications the Speakman SE-395 provides up to 60 gallons per minute of 85 degree water, sufficient to operate two (2) combination showers simultaneously. Unit comes complete with a steam instantaneous hot water heater and thermostatic mixing valve.
For facilities where a sufficient hot water source is not available, Speakman safety products offer the SE-380 & SE-385 hot water systems. Both units come complete with a commercial grade electric hot water heater and thermostatic mixing valve. The SE-380 will support a single combination unit and is rated for hazardous area applications. The SE-385 is for non-hazardous locations and will handle up to two continuously operating combination units.

  • Tn the event of interruption of the cold water supply, the control mechanism closes off the hot water port, stopping all flow.
  • Tn the event of interruption of the hot water supply, the control mechanism allows cold flow through both the fixed and variable bypass.
  • In the event that the liquid motor fails, the control mechanism closes off the hot water port with the reverse seat and fully opens the internal variable bypass to allow cold water flow.

Quick Tips for Emergency Showers & Eyewashes

• ANSI Z35S.1 requires that companie~ provide Emergency Showers and/or Eyewashes within 10 seconds travel, time of a hazard. Look for signs of hazardous materials and make sure eyewashes and showers are within the prescribed distance.
• ANSI Z35S.l requires that shower valves be of simple operation, turn off to on in one second or less, and provide hands free operation once activated. Self closing shower valves do not meet this standard and should be replaced.
• OSHA Directive Number STD I-S.2. "This directive provides guidelines regarding eyewash and body flushing facilities required for immediate emergency use in electric storage battery charging and maintenance areas." Make sure emergency equipment is properly located near these hazards.
• Personal Eyewash equipment, such as squeeze bottles, do not meet the requirements of plumbed or self-contained eyewash equipment. Make sure units meeting ANSI Z35S.1 are within 10 seconds travel time from hazard.
• The storage, transfer and use of flammable liquids require showers and/or eyewashes as secondary protection. Look for containers used to handle or store these materials and make sure ANSI Z35S.1 compliant Emergency Equipment is within 10 seconds travel distance.
• Look for areas where workers are using Personal Protective Equipment such as goggles and liquid proof gloves. These are found in areas where hazardous materials are being used and eyewashes and/or showers will be required as secondary protection.
• Hand held drench hoses do not meet the criteria of a plumbed or self-contained eyewash. If these are the only means of protection, they should be replaced or supplemented with equipment meeting the requirements of ANSI Z35S.I.
