This page covers the PremAire and the PremAire Cadet Respirators. The PremAire Cadet information was updated in March of 2008

The PremAire Supplied Air Respirator system is one of the most advanced air line respirators available. Designed to provide the utmost in versatility, the modular system allows users to "create" different respirator configurations from one unit. As a result, workers can use the PremAire system to match specific respiratory protection needs to the task at hand.

A lightweight mask mounted regulator provides high air flow and responds quickly to changing breathing requirements.

The basic PremAire Respirator includes the patented manifold and can be upgraded with any of the four following options:

  1. An Escape Cylinder that permits emergency escape from Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH) atmospheres
  2. A Dual Supply option that lets workers connect from one pressurized continuous air source to another without losing continuity of air flow
  3. A Duo-Twin option that converts the respirator into a combination supplied air / air purifying device. This allows workers in non-IDLH atmospheres to move freely from station to station without being tethered to an air supply hose
  4. A Vortex Tube option that delivers whole body temperature control for added worker comfort

The PremAire Respirator is a full-face, pressure demand, Type-C supplied air respirator with a patented waist mounted manifold that gives incredible flexibility. Featuring five individual ports, the manifold makes it possible to add any of these capbilities:

  • Supplied air respirator with emergency escape air cylinder for egress from ILDH atmospheres.
  • Combination supplied air / air purifying respirator which lets you move freely from station to station without being tethered to an air supply hose, yet still be protected by the device's air purifying capability
  • Suppled air respirator with dual supply capability -- an MSA Exclusive that eliminates the need to drag long lengths of air supply hose around the work area.
  • Supplied air respirator with vortex tube, which provides body cooling or heating, whenever protective clothing is required.

No matter which option you choose, you'll find that the PremAire system provides dependable protection, engineering excellence and cost effective versatility.

MSA offers more PremAire System Respirator choices than ever before. Thousands of possible combinations let workers select just the right PremAire Respirator for the job.

MSA's Assemble-to-Order (ATO) system makes ordering the right unit easier and faster than ever. Instead of choosing from a handful of complete PremAire assemblies, users can order a custom made unit with every option exactly as desired. The ATO system works by allowing users to create their own part numbers. Each digit of an ATO part number will represent a specific component, so that the entire part number represents a finished respirator built exactly to the desired specifications.

Using the ATO is easy. The user selects the number or letter that corresponds to the choice of components and fills in the appropriate box. A number or letter from each category must be selected. For example, to order a PremAire System respirator with nylon belt assembly; right hip 10 minute composite escape cylinder; dual-supply option with 8" hose; a non-NFPA, medium, black hycar Ultra Elite Facepiece with large nosecup and large EZ Don Head Harness; Foster steel quick disconnect; and a hard-side carrying case, use this ATO part number: B-PS1310-11M24-G-1

B - PS         -           -   -

The above sequence, properly filled out will by your part number for that PremAire System

PremAire Cadet Supplied Air Respirator
The PremAire Cadet Respirator is a pressure demand, Type C supplied air respirator with a mask mounted regulator that responds quickly to wearer's changing breathing requirements. Available in two models, the respirator can serve as a basic supplied air device or, with the Duo-Twin option, function as a combination airline / air purifying respirator. It can quickly be upgraded to the versatile, state of the art PremAire System.

Designed for a variety of applications, PremAire Cadet Respirators can be used in non-IDLH (Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health) environments only. Operating inlet pressure is 60 to 100 psig. NIOSH / MSHA approved.

To upgrade the PremAire Cadet to the advanced PremAire System, users simply install the patented PremAire System manifold assembly on the existing PremAire Cadet Respirator. Positioned near the wearer's waist, the manifold serves as an "air distribution center" for the entire system, while also permitting use of all PremAire System options

PremAire Cadet Escape Respirator
PremAire Cadet Escape Respirator with 10 minute escape cylinder MSA PremAire Cadet Escape Respirator with 5 minute escape cylinder

Economical combination supplied-air-respirator with escape cylinder in a streamlined, lightweight design. Escape cylinders rated at 5-, 10- and 15-minutes.
The PremAire Cadet Escape Respirator, a combination supplied-air respirator with escape cylinder, is designed to be versatile, comfortable, and affordable. A streamlined new design offers a first stage regulator and cylinder valve within one assembly, creating a very small size and profile that is less likely to snag when working in tight places. Low-profile escape cylinders can be worn on either the right or left hip. The Ultra Elite® Pressure-Demand Facepiece or Advantage® 4000 Facepiece with APR conversion capability offer choice of sizes and nose cups. The Firehawk® MMR Regulator let users choose from Push-To-Connect (PTC) or Slide-To- Connect (STC) attachments. All regulators feature a bypass and a choice of solid cover or purge. The economical PremAire Cadet Escape Respirator is a cost-effective respiratory protection solution for many industries.
For ordering ease and flexibility, these systems will be sold as part-numbered kits or through MSA's Assemble-To- Order (ATO) System. PremAire Cadet Escape Respirator is NIOSH-approved as a combination supplied-air respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus.

Air Cylinder Connections
Air Cylinder Connections
Air cylinders connected by Tee Blocks and Pigtails, equipped with the Audi-Larm Warning Device and Air-Cylinder Pressure Regulator.
Audi-Larm™ Warning Device
Air-supply cylinders can be equipped with the Audi-Larm lowpressure warning device. This warning device uses a loud, clear bell to signal the user when the air-supply in the cylinder(s) has been reduced to a limited time of service. It rings when the cylinder pressure reaches approximately 480 psig (high pressure alarm rings at 1000 psig). It also rings briefly every time the cylinder is pressurized to check that the alarm is operating properly.
Part No. Description
85078 Audi-Larm Assembly (up to 2216 psig)
492307 High-pressure Audi-Larm Assembly (up to 4500 psig)
68858 Air-Cylinder Pressure Regulator, dual-gauge, 0-3000 psig
633352 High-Pressure Air-Cylinder Regulator, dual-gauge, 0-5, 500 psig
68850 Tee Block
68851 Pigtail
Tee blocks and pigtails are used to connect a bank of cylinders together, thus, extending your air supply. The coupler tees, which make a connection between the supply cylinder valve and the pigtail, and the outlet connection, are constructed of brass, while the pigtails, joining the supply cylinders, are made of tubular copper.

Air-Cylinder Pressure Regulator
An air-cylinder pressure regulator is a required accessory when air-line respirators operate from a cylinder. This dual-gauge regulator receives the varying outlet pressure from the cylinder, reduces it, and regulates it to a constant pressure of approximately 80 psig, the optimum pressure for operation of the regulator.

Manifolds
Manifold
Manifolds are required whenever two to four respirators are connected to a single air source. MSA manifolds have quickdisconnect assemblies with automatic shut-off outlets.
