Shower Filter Replacement
KDF55 - There are 15 ounces (466) grams of KDF media in each cartridge. As chlorinated water flows through the filter cartridge, the two dissimilar metals in KDF, (copper and zinc) create a galvanic or electrolytic reaction which causes the two chlorine ions to combine with a zinc ion to form a harmless zinc chloride. KDF does not hold the chlorine, it changes chlorine from an element to a harmless compound, which flushes out of the filter. KDF is a non-toxic granular filter media which is produced within the regulations of “The Drinking Water Act’ (PL 99-399 of June 19, 1986.) Replacement averages between every 9 and 12 months. A reduction in flow would indicate a need for replacement. Your results may vary depending on use and water conditions.
KDF NOTE: To actually remove chlorine, in addition to, volatile organic contaminants from the water please reference CWL and/or EWS whole home filtration appliances.

Granular Activated Carbon Reference List

Below is a simple reference chart to give some perspective as to GAC’s capabilities with various substances. Some items are heavy metals and inorganics, while others are VOC’s (volatile organic compounds), some of which are man made pollutants. Still other items, such as hardness, are not even considered contaminants. In general, GAC is very economical and a great compliment to municipally-treated water without the disadvantages of more aggressive filtration. GAC is used in all filtration due to its removal capacities. Know your water to select the correct product for you, your family and your home.
See the Upgraded PB-1 for greater GAC capabilities (FUGAC150, FUGAC250, FUGAC350)

PB-1 Upgraded GAC Filter Cartridge Extruded Activated Carbon Block Filter
The PB-1 cartridge meets or complies with NSF Standard 53 for the removal of Lead and Cysts (Giardia, Cryptosporidium) in addition to removal of Chlorine and other Volatile Organic Compounds.
In use with: FUGAC150, FUGAC250, UU250, FUGAC350 and UU350.

• Lead Reduction: 2,500 gallons @ 0.75 GPM Filter Dimensions: 2.50” O.D. x 1.25” I.D. x 10” L
• Cyst Reduction: Giardia, Cryptosporidium Carbon Weight: 0.85 lbs.
>99.96% reduction of 1 - 2 μm particulates
>99.984% reduction of 3 - 4 μm particles Construction:
• Class 1 Turbidity Reduction Precision Continuous Extrusion,
• Outstanding Chlorine, Taste and Odor Reduction Graded Density Pre-Filtration Design
• Chlorine Reduction >90 % @ 6,000 gallons @ 0.75 GPM

Lead and Heavy Metal Reduction
Reduction of Soluble and Insoluble (Particulate) Lead The PB-1 extruded activated carbon filters reduce soluble lead using an ion-exchange filter medium with high specificity for soluble lead. Particulate filtration is used to intercept insoluble lead-containing particles. Standard 2.50” O.D. x 9.75” L filters will reduce lead, a minimum of 90% (or 150 ppb) over 2,500 gallons @ 0.75 gpm meeting NSF test protocol for Standard 53.

Chemical Adsorption
PB-1 filters offer high levels of chemical reduction in potable drinking water, including the removal of chlorine and other compounds that contribute to taste and odor.

Particulate, Cyst and Turbidity Reduction
PB-1 filters provide >99.984% reduction of 3-4 μm particulate, >99.96% reduction of 1-2 μm particulates, and are high performance sediment filters with extended life. Graded-density prefiltration combined with high dirt capacity extruded activated carbon provide several times greater life than molded filters.

PB-1 filters consist of activated carbon particles fused into a uniform block with enhanced adsorptive capacity and efficiency. These filters flow in a radial, outside-to-inside direction, providing increased dirt capacity and low pressure drop. Unlike more basic GAC filters, these cartridges will not channel or by-pass, due to extreme uniformity of the extruded activated carbon core. Service life of the PB-1 is greatly extended by two layers of prefiltration media
consisting of 15 μm polypropylene spun-bonded outer pre-filtration layer and a 5 μm polypropylene melt-blown inner layer.

Caution: Filters or media representing percentages of removal “up to” do not provide the minimum removal rate or the quantitative amount that can actually be removed. In addition, any removal may be over a limited amount of water and may meet only the minimum of the standard for that filter. Better marketing does not provide better consumer protection.

In addtion to the detailed and technical information provided about this filter cartridge, please review the GAC Reference, the basic characteristics of carbon filtration regarding the removal of chlorine and other disinfectants, as well as, volatile organic containments (VOC’s).

UV Disinfection

The addtion of a UV module provides for the safeguard against Bacteria, E-coli,Viral and other microorganisms and meets or complies with NSF Standard 55.

The unit was allowed to warm up five minutes before testing. Samples of the exposed and non exposed water were taken and duplicate plate counts conducted (plate Count Agar, 35C, 48 hours). The results are given above.
The UV lamp is effective through one year of continuous service and must be replaced annually to maintain a 99% effective rate.

Reverse Osmosis Information

REVERSE OSMOSIS - Is it right for you?
Reverse Osmosis or “RO” has become a term that has slipped into our common language. When you need a tissue and ask for a “Kleenex”, its not the brand you need, it’s the tissue. It’s the same with RO. You may ask for the device, be told you need one, or be considering buying one without understanding what you’re asking for. Unlike the tissue however, this decision can be impactful.
How does an RO work?
Water is forced by pressure through a semi-permeable membrane while dissolved solids and particulate matters are left behind. The residual contaminants are flushed to the drain. The resulting product water is a cleaner, safer water. These residential units are point of use or sink applications. Asking to do the whole house does not take into account; storing the production water and other drawbacks to the installation and operation of an RO system. Commercial or industrial RO systems can be very complicated, expensive and are designed for specific needs and applications.
Any drawbacks to an RO unit?
The drawbacks are why EWS, Inc. provides the consumer a selection of product and why we include this information to help you decide what product is right for you. Here are only a few things to consider.

  • RO’s can waste up to 20 gallons of water for one produced (our ratio is a low 3-6 gallons per 1 produced).
  • RO’s produce very aggressive water. You can not plumb the filtered water in copper (the water will eat away or leach the copper) and, if cross-connected to other sources such as an ice-maker, it may provide warranty or service issues. When bottled water is produced, one of the methods to produce that water is reverse osmosis, however essential minerals are added back “for a pure, fresh taste” as quoted on any label of Dasani, a bottled water produced throughout the USA by Coca Cola. Please note - all spring waters, bottled at the source, have natural minerals and total dissolved solids of varying degrees, which provide the consumer a choice based on taste. (see Evian, Panna, Pellegrino, etc...)
  • If an RO system is working correctly, the water can taste flat (like distilled) or metallic. The water produced may be wet, however your plants may not like it. The water is aggressive, it flushes, and does not allow for assimilation starving the plant which may be a drawback for you as well.

When is an RO appropriate to use?
See below on rejection rates and all those scary things. If you’re on municipal water, call your utility and request a recent report. Those items on that list are highly regulated. They are either not in your water or municipally treated, and therefore RO can be redundant and unnecessary. If you’re on well water, have your water completely and independently tested. Do not trust a local salesman. He’s the guy who’s usually pushing RO along with the softener, so the RO can take the salt out of the water that the softener put in!
Are you looking for better tasting water?
This may be the best place to start and finish. The RO unit would not take out taste and odor, the Chlorine and VOC’s if not for the Carbon (GAC) filter. Maybe you simply need a basic drinking water system (FUGAC200) or to upgrade to Lead and Cysts removal, the RO is fine, but so is a 1-micron carbon block cartridge found in our FUGAC250. Bacterial safeguard? Add our UV option to your RO unit or see the complete UU250 as an alternative.
The Bottom Line
Drinking water systems take up less room (RO’s have the storage bottle), make as much water as you like (RO’s have limited production) are easier to install and maintain, can be cross-connected without issues, have less hassles, and are less costly (RO’s have drain connections, need an air gap by some codes, and make noise during production). However, if an RO is required based on your taste, needs, concerns and/or local water conditions at least you made an informed decision and have been provided a complete selection of RO product for proper application.
The Option and Correct Application of Booster Pumps
Booster pumps are critical to the effective performance of reverse osmosis membranes in low water pressure situations (feedwater below 40 PSI and/or high TDS). Along with mechanical and electro-mechanical options, booster pumps enhance RO systems in the following ways:
• Monitoring performance
• Improving membrane efficiency
• Conserving water
• Conserving power
• Shutting down the pump when continuous product water is not necessary
Booster pumps P6000 are recommended in reverse osmosis applications where feedwater pressure is less than 40 PSI. Feedwater high in Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) may need a boost, in order to perform within rejection parameters. FACT: Over 500 mg/l or ppm TDS, the PSI will be reduced by 1 PSI for every 100 TDS. For Example; Feedwater that is 2,000 mg/l of TDS will reduce PSI by 15. A booster pump will compensate to allow for proper application. On well-water, know your water pressure (PSI) and your TDS.

* Operational, maintenance, and replacement requirements are essential for the product to perform as advertised. Rejection rates may vary slightly between CTA & TFC membranes. Rates based on the following test feed water: Temperature: 77°F (25°C) TDS: 500 ppm. Pressure: 60 PSI. Membranes meet or comply with NSF standard 58

Reverse Osmosis Operational Diagram CTA (Cellulose Triacetate): CTA membrane may be used for chlorinated and non-chlorinated water supplies. Product water produced = 5 - 20 gallons per day.

TFC (Thin Film Composite): TFC membrane is a long-life membrane for non-chlorinated water supplies. A carbon filter must precede the RO element if used on chlorinated feedwater. Product water produced = 10 - 50 gallons per day.
RSR Control Valve - All in One Control Valve
The RSR Valve includes the Flow Restrictor, Check Valve and Automatic Shut-Off Valve for optimum performance. The RSR-100 (CTA18 membrane) and RSR-150 (TFC35 membrane) are unique because they utilize a calibrated, stainless steel orifice to regulate the waste flow. The jet-stream force of the water going through the orifice will not allow scale to form. Therefore, the flow rate across the membrane is constant, enabling it to function at its optimum level. As a result, the life of the membrane will be extended as well. Better performance, less maintenance, less wasted water, and a product not subject to the typical leaking of the other manufacturers’ units.

High flow rates to accommodate most any application.
EWS units backwash and self clean. A great appliance for second homes, vacation homes or any residences. Leaving sink filtration units, in-line units and/or refrigerator filters for periods of time without usage can create problems and, unlike your EWS unit, these other units have no ability to self clean.
EWS Conditioning
EWS conditioned water provides a nice clean feeling and not the slippery or slimy feeling (it seems you just can’t get the soap off) as with softeners.
Alternative to water softeners. EWS has none of the harsh effects of salts (sodium and/or potassium chloride). No salts or chemicals to add routinely.
EWS inhibits scale formation in pipes and water heaters.
Easier wipe off and clean up of water spotting than with untreated water.
Use less soaps and detergents than with untreated water.
EWS is environmentally safe with no brine discharge (as with a softener). Softeners have been actually outlawed or restricted in certain locals and need to avoid discharge into septic systems.
EWS has no legal restrictions, warranty, or finish issues as with softeners.
Installs at the main water service line. No loops or bypasses needed to avoid drinking or using softened water.
All completely assembled appliances include the following standard features:
Specified fiberglass tank with stainless cover (plastic dome on 1354 series), complete valving with lower filter screen, dual-port bypass and male yoke (EWS-1054, EWS-1354 only), specified GAC media kit, riser and specified ICN Conditioner(s) with lower screen and complete service guide with installation and use instructions.
Environmental Water Systems - Whole Home Filtration and Conditioning Appliance
Model: EWS-1054
The EWS Series of whole home water filtration and conditioning appliances is designed to provide quality, filtered and conditioned water to the entire home, which creates a healthier water environment for you and your family.
EWS Filtration:
The granular activated carbon (GAC) high grade filtration media removes chlorine and other volatile organic compounds (VOC’s), improving the taste, clarity and odor of all the water. The water can be used for all purposes; drinking and cooking, bathing and showering, steam and sauna; for you and your family, pets and plants.
EWS Conditioning:
EWS physical conditioning helps solve those problems associated with hard water without the disadvantages of softening. In use Worlwide, our catalytic process is called Increased Calcite Nucleation (ICN). Once the water has been filtered, the water travels up through the riser and the manifold containing the ICN, where the conditioner breaks apart the calcium and magnesium minerals from the bonds of the water molecules. Once in suspension, the minerals become attracted to each other and form concentric patterns which no longer adhere to surfaces, actively inhibiting scale formation.
The Result: Easier wipe up of water spotting, better use of soaps, scale prevention within your pipes and water heater, and filtered water to your entire home. None of the salt issues of slippery feeling water, brine discharge and other problems. EWS will deliver water throughout the home at the flow rate and pressure normally found. The automatic backwash does not allow the filtration media to pack, channel or pool, this prevents any bacterial build-up and provides continued and renewed surface area for filtration. Years before media (not a cartridge) and ICN replacement based on usage and conditions.
Larger units available based on water conditions, usage and/or line service size.

Filtration options based on actual water conditions and/or consumer need, or consumer concern or preference
Whole home filtration can be combined with specific sink units for drinking (oral intake only) due to specific water problems or conditions, or consumer’s needs or concerns at the point of use.
• For Removal/Safeguard of Lead and Cysts, see FUGAC250
• For Removal/Safeguard of Lead and Cysts, Bacterial, Viral, E-coli, and other Microorganisms, see UU250
• For other specific applications, See reverse osmosis systems, if applicable
Hardness minerals, naturally found Calcium and Magnesium are not contaminants nor health issues, strictly aesthetic, however;
• based on water conditions or consumer preference (you like the slippery feeling in a shower or believe the only relief is found in a softener), then add a softener (this is not a filtration product) to the hot side only, easily accessed at the inlet side to the water heater. This will compliment the EWS Appliance and limit the softener and its’ usage to hot water only.

Proper Application: EWS-1354 Series should be considered based on larger homes, larger families (5 or more), greater water usage, multiple water heaters, pools, spas, main service line (required on 11/4” or 11/2” lines for flow rate capabilities) and/or water conditions (harder water 15 grains or more), providing a greater filtration bed depth (21/2 cu ft) and increased conditioning capacity (2 ICN’s) for increased contact and dwell time they would both provide.

MEDIA SPECIFICATIONS:
Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) - Primary Filtration Media
•Large surface area results in an exceptionally high capacity and efficiency. Activated Carbon is very hard so losses due to attrition are kept to a minimum. GAC constitutes an excellent filtration media, having a density with a balanced pore structure for more efficient operation. GAC even with it’s high capacity should be replaced when the filter loses the capacity for removal of taste and odor.
•GAC is the most effective media for the removal of contaminants from water. GAC has the unique ability to adsorb chlorine from water and is the most preferred method for the complete protection from trihalomethanes (THM’s) and has been proven 99% effective.
•However, no one media, resin or cartridge is capable of all things. Please refer to the GAC reference chart for capacities.
•A high grade, dedusted GAC with an iodine rating of 1200 has been selected for all CWL and EWS Series with the added Filter Ag and Filter Sand for enhancements.
GAC PHYSICAL PROPERTIES:
Color: Black, Form: Granular, Mesh Size: 12 x 40
Density: 33 lbs. / cu. ft., Water Soluble Ash: less than 0.5%
Iodine No.: 1200 Abrasion No.: 75 min.
Meets and complies with: American Water Works Association Standard -B604-74
Bed Depth: 26 - 30 in., Backwash Rate: 8-10 gpm
Backwash Bed Expansion: 30 - 40 % of bed depth
Filter Ag
Used to afford maximum removal of suspended matter throughout the filter bed and to allow the GAC media to work at maximum efficiency
* Acts as a Pre-Sediment (20 micron) media
* Less pressure loss, increased filter capacity
* Light weight, lower backwash rates.
Under Bed Filter Sand
Keeps riser in place and promotes better flow and even water distribution through media bed and during backwash cycles to lift bed uniformally.
CONDITIONS FOR OPERATION:
System Service Flow Rate - up to 15 gpm
Min/Max Water Temperature: 40º / 80 ºF Min/Max Water Pressure: 40 PSI / 75 PSI
Warning: Install Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV), by code in places, to prevent pressure surges and warranty issues

*Digital Technology Valve exclusively designed by EWS to provide years of maintenance free operation.
•Easy time set
•Consumer friendly
•Easier for install/start-ups
•Shorter, yet more efficient backwash cycles
ICN Conditioner
The ICN's Field triggers a reaction (increased calcite nucleation) that changes the structure of the minerals as they relate to water molecules. Minerals become suspended and form concentric patterns into free floating disks which make the hardness minerals attach to each other and no longer adhere to hard surfaces. The ICN unit is a series of dissimilar metals which creates the field that triggers this reaction (This is not a magnet). This conditioning (not softening) process is used widely by EWS throughout the US and around the world.

Environmental Water Systems Whole Home Filtration and Conditioning Appliances
Models: EWS-1354, EWS-1354-HF, EWS-1354-11/2”

Once the water has been filtered, the water travels up through the riser and the manifold containing the ICN(s), where the conditioner breaks apart the calcium and magnesium minerals from the bonds of the water molecules. Once in suspension, the minerals become attracted to each other and form concentric patterns which no longer adhere to surfaces, actively inhibiting scale formation.
