| Code requires that flame resistant garments be designed for quick and easy removal. This is why we put the extra effort in and install a series of high tension snaps spaced 3-1/2" apart. The snaps allow for a quick and easy exit from the garment in the event that the wearer is involved in a flash fire or electrical arc flash. The high tension snap system also minimizes the amount of conductive material when compared to a full zipper. The snaps are positioned so they are not exposed to the outside or the wearer's body. | ||

In addition, each cuff has a two-button closure. Our most appreciated detail is the under arm gusset. | The raglan sleeve was named after Lord Raglan, a British Officer who lost his right arm at the Battle of Waterloo. Unlike typical sleeves, the raglan sleeve extends from the wrist, over the shoulder to the neckline as one single piece. The raglan sleeve has a wider arm than other sleeve designs. Our combination of a raglan sleeve with underarm gussets allows for freer movement of the arms. | ||

| The illustration at right shows yarns at the edge of the fabric: A) is a typical twill weave, and B) is a Benchmark Classic Twill weave, one of our newest flame resistant fabrics. The Classic Twill is abrasion resistant because it is made from a complicated interlacing weave which allows yarns to slide under one another. This gives the added benefit of a smooth surface and an exceptionally soft, supple feel. A high thread count adds strength to this material, yet it remains very flexible and comfortable to wear. | ![]() |

| We pay close attention to all details, even belt loops! You will notice that we position one belt loop over the side pockets for those who like to hang keys or badges. What you may not notice is that our belt loops are first sewn into the bottom of the waist band and then reinforcing stitches are applied to the loop and body of the pants for double reinforcement. While this is a more difficult construction it is also the strongest construction for belt loops. | ||

| In order to protect against flash fire or arc flash, the wearer's outermost layer must be flame resistant. Flame resistant garments only protect the areas covered; they must be worn fully closed in order to be effective. In addition, synthetic materials such as nylon or polyester should never be worn, even under flame resistant outer wear. | ||

| Code does not allow for large embroidery on flame resistant garments. At Benchmark we go one step further: we do not perform any direct embroidery because it punctures the flame resistant fabric thousands of times. This excessive puncturing with polyester thread can become molten and may cause severe burns when it comes in contact with a heat source. A safe alternative is a patch. When patches are sewn onto the flame resistant garment, the flame resistant fabric is punctured with as little as 50 stitches. | ||

| Nylon, spandex, polyester and other synthetic materials are strictly prohibited from being used when there is a threat of flames or electric arc. These materials have a fast burn rate, which means once they ignite the flame front spreads very quickly. A burning synthetic material will melt and form droplets of molten material. In contrast. Benchmark FR material does not support combustion and will not melt or drip. Benchmark FR material will automatically extinguish after the ignition source has been removed. | ||

| Aside from removing your garments and viewing the inside labels, the only other way of telling a Benchmark FR garment apart from a conventional piece of clothing is to look for our flame resistant logo. It is in an obvious place on every Benchmark flame resistant product. On our denim jeans, look for the FR symbol just above the left pocket. | ||
THE THREAT ARC FLASH: FLASH FIRE: CODE COMPLIANCE OSHA: NESC 2007: |
![]() |
| When exposed to an ignition source such as flames, severe heat or an electric arc, Benchmark FR garments will react to protect the wearer by self-extinguishing within moments after the ignition source has been removed. It is this rapid reaction that can save the wearer's life and limit the extent of an injury. Benchmark FR fabrics are permanently impregnated with an organo-phosphorous flame retardant which reacts with the hydroxyl group in the cellulose of cotton. This flame retardant is not a coating, but rather, a chemical bond with the natural fiber's molecular structure. In the event that the fabric is exposed to an ignition source, a carbon scaffold is formed through a rapid dehydration of the cotton's cellulose. This reaction not only counteracts heat penetration, but also controls the spread of fire by "removing the fuel" from the fabric. Benchmark FR garments will not melt or drip and they will not shrink in the presence of heat. By maintaining a fabric-to-skin air cushion, Benchmark FR garments offer an increased level of thermal protection. If the easy care instructions are followed the flame resistant properties will remain effective for the life of the garment, regardless of the number of washing and wearing cycles. |
| OUR ADVANTAGE When flame resistant fabrics were first introduced, there was no benchmark, or standard of measure, to gauge the performance level of each fabric. With the recent development and adaptation of codes and standards, we can now quantify the various levels of protection offered by a flame resistant material. "We are the safest" is no longer an empty catch phrase, and can actually be determined in an evaluation of the ratings shown inside a piece of protective equipment. At Benchmark, we oversee the entire manufacturing process from start to finish. That is, we are a "vertical manufacturer." This means that we weave the majority of our fabrics, impart them with flame resistant properties, and then carefully construct the finished garments for a comfortable, lasting fit. In fact, the only outsourcing we allocate is for testing performed by independent laboratories. All Benchmark FR materials are evaluated by third party laboratories to ensure unbiased and accurate test results. We feel that being a vertical manufacturer shows a commitment to both the FR market and our products. Most of our competitors are known as "cut & sew" manufacturers because they simply purchase treated material from a mill and convert the fabric into garments. As a result cut & sew manufacturers are forced to minimize fabric usage which compromises fit and construction. Simply stated, cut & sew manufacturing does not lend itself to innovation, product quality or value for the customer. At Benchmark our clothing's fit is based entirely on what is comfortable to wear and not what is the most economical to construct. We take pride in the fact that our garments have style, fit generously, feel softer and wear more comfortably than other flame resistant garments on the market. Compare Benchmark to others brands; the difference will be obvious. |
