HOW WE DEVELOP BOOTS THAT ARE POLAR PROVEN
Over a decade ago Baffin started out by revolutionizing the waterproof boot market as one of the first companies to use injection molding of easily recyclable synthetic polymers in place of traditional vulcanized rubber. More than a decade of constant R&D and in-field testing has led Baffin to produce the leading edge, technical footwear presented in this catalogue.
THE SOLE OF A BAFFIN BOOT
Baffin boots are different to most shoes and work boots because the sole and midsole is moulded to the base in one continuous process. The sole itself is a marvel of modern engineering because it is made up of several advanced thermo-set polymers that are combined together to achieve the right balance of warmth, protection, low weight and grip. We have developed a variety of unique sole patterns, each designed for specific applications. Some boots have rugged self cleaning soles for working outside, while others provide slip resistance for wet indoor conditions. We have combined these and other sole patterns with abrasion resistant compounds to enhance safety and durability on all terrain.
Our classic GelFlex midsole is made up of combination of thermoplastic rubbers. The midsole is made up of a polymer that is elastic yet supportive, making it comfortable, and isolating the foot from the anti-slip outsole with its aggressive tread patterns. Gel Flex is used on our Extreme product bases. For lighter-wear boots we use a combination of thermoplastic rubbers.
THE BAFFIN INNER BOOT SYSTEM IS UNIQUE AND SUPERIOR TO FELT LINERS
Baffin boots have a unique mUlti-layer inner boot system. Why multiple layers? Each of the layers contributes to different aspects of the boots performance. The thickest layer is an insulating Polymech foam. It is open cell so it is compressible and provides the right level of cushioning.
A vaporized aluminum membrane has a silver surface that reflects energy back towards the foot. On our boots that are rated for very low temperatures we use two of these membranes. The Hydromax II layer is developed from the same material used in a baby's diaper, wicking moisture away from the skin. This is combined with a B-Tek 4-channel hollow fiber layer that acts as a moisture control system keeping the foam dry and funneling water vapor out of the boot.
Our mUlti-layer inner boot system creates a warm boot that can be used for extreme exertion because body moisture is wicked away and expelled from the boot, keeping the feet dry. Felt packs used by other boots become compressed over time, reducing the level of insulation and adding to a sloppy fit. Also they absorb water, which in low temperatures can freeze, making the footwear uncomfortable.
THERMAPLUSH LINER
We have upgraded the innermost layer of our inner boot system to Thermaplush. It is a chamois leather-like material that feels remarkably soft and smooth. It makes wearing Baffin boots a sensual delight. |
