Boxcar Door Opener - Aluminum Version
Aluminum Box Car Door Opener

ALUMINUM VERSION. For interior or exterior open rail docks. Dock must have minimum 10 feet clear running space for length of box car. Opener is made of welded alloy aluminum 6061-T-6, with a yield strength equal to mild steel, but at only one third the weight. Cross beam length 90 inches or will make to suit dock width. Forklift runs parallel to box car to open or close door. (Forklift must stay at least 18" in from edge of dock at all times). Pincer hook connects to pull tab on car door. When properly used, opener will not damage car doors or forklift. Meets OSHA's "de minimis" exception to the ruling on using forklifts to open box cars.

For forkblades up to 5" wide and up to 2" thick. For use only where space between railcar and dock is 48 inches or less.

1) Advise blade width and thickness. Standard model, fits blades up to 7" wide by 2-1/2" thick. Special models available for larger blades--contact us for pricing.
2) Advise distance between edge of dock and side of car door. Longest arm length 90" which will reach over a 48" gap. If gap is less that 48", we will provide the appropriate arm length.

For closed docks. Open a boxcar within the space of a doorway. As easy as maneuvering a boat trailer, the Limited Access Opener tows and pulls the door open or closed. Welded aluminum, weighing only 65 lbs., the opener fits all standard forklift blades. The swivel arm has a special grab hook to connect to hole in pushpocket bracket on car. Chain and hook secure the opener to the forklift mast. Open plug type doors as well as sliding doors. Can open car doors which are wider than the dock door. No damage to box car door. Opener works equally well on open docks.

  1. What is gap between edge of dock and side of car?
  2. What are fork blade thickness and width?

Plug-Type Door Opener

Plug-type car doors can be tricky to open. During a long train ride, the load inside can shift against the door. This can cause the door to pop out with unexpected force and make it difficult to slide the door open. Plug Door Opener mounts on a fork lift so that the worker remains at a safe distance while the door is unlatched. The forklift is then turned 90 degrees and the worker can slide the door open with the adjustable push bar. Plug Door Opener fits all twin blade forklifts with blade widths of 6" or less.
